Soldier's demining cleaver, the sample of 1827

Despite widespread firearms in 18th - first half 19th centuries in the Russian Empire, edged weapons will not lose its value.

Engineers, sappers, foot gunners were given cutlasses, which they can use not only the comments in the fight, but also as a cut-and-sawing tool. One of the standard of this type of weapon is presented in the exposition of the museum of Local Lore - a soldier's sword sapper, the sample of 1827. This item was handed over by Grodno Historical and Archaeological Museum in 1987.

The total length of the weapon is 67 cm. The blade is steel, single-edged, small curvature. The length is 50 cm, the width 6 cm. Total weight with a sheath - 1900 grams. The handle is made of wood, it has a hole Lanyard (belt which a loop is worn on the wrist to prevent loss of weapons when discharging of the hands). The end of the metal cross is slightly bent in opposite directions - up and down. Soldiers wore a sheathed sword on the shoulder strap or on the waist-belt.

This item was used by sapper units of regular troops of the Russian Empire until 1834, when it was removed from service in the lower ranks of the engineering battalion and replaced cleaver sample of the year.
