Polotsk during the First Russian Revolution

In January 1905, Polotskwas gripped by revolutionary unrest like most of the cities of the European part of the Russian Empire. In 1904 the revolutionary committee of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party was established in the city. This organization supervised the performances of workers and employeestogether with Jewish revolutionary organizations during the first Russian revolution.
The most dynamic and violent events developed in October 1905.After the dispersal of the October 18 rally with the use of weapons, the life of the city was almost paralyzed for three days. The city services, educational institutions and industrial enterprises did not work.The revolutionary committee created working-class guards and armed them.On October 23, representatives of workers' squads fought with the police and troops entered into the city in hotels “Paris” and “Golden Anchor”. On that dayPolotsk lost about 100 of its inhabitants. After the bloody events of October 23, raids and searches were conducted in the city. After the arrest of the majority of members, the revolutionary committee of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party switched to an illegal position.The first Russian revolution ended with the dispersalof the State Duma on July 3, 1907.
