Book «Rozmyślania dla księży świeckich o powinnościach chrześcijańskich»

Jesuit printing house worked at the Jesuit College in Polotsk from 1787 to 1820. During this time more than 500 publications were published, mainly in Polish and Latin, not numerous publications in Russian, Italian, German and French. These are works of palemists of the 16-17th centuries, Roman writers, philosophers, liturgical literature, dictionaries, as well as textbooks on the general geography and history of Rome, the art of rhetoric and grammar of the Latin language.

Among the published books were volumes of "Rozmyślania dla księży świeckich o powinnościach chrześcijańskich" (Reflections for secular priests on Christian duties) (1799) by the French theologian Joseph Chevasu. One of the volumes exhibited at the Polotsk Museum of Regional Studies. The purpose of the books was to master the duties of the clergy and prepare priests to service. Shevasu wrote his books anonymously and his name was not mentioned as the author. At the same time, Jan Benislawski, the author of the Polish translation of the book, was known. He was the censor of a Jesuit printing house, participated in negotiations with the Pope to approve the Roman Catholic archbishopric and to maintain the former status of the Jesuit order in the Russian Empire.
