Ringing bells of Polotsk

The church bell, cast in 1699, draws the attention in the Museum of Local Lore. In 1978 it was transferred to the museum by director of secondary school Lomashevskoy I. Nosov. The teacher explained that during the Great Patriotic War, the bell was hidden from Nazis in the ground. Later, people found it and noticed the inscription on the bell that states that it was made with the money of Polotsk judges. People who found the bell decided to give it to the city museum of Polotsk. However, when the Soviet Union changed it`s relation to religion, believers of Dokshicy district wanted to return the bell back. But the museum staff, knowing about the loss of a small fragment of the sound rings, decided to preserve the bell.

The bell is a piece of art. Labels on its outer side and ornament contain much useful information. At the top of the bell we read the date of manufacture and the name of the master: «Glory to Almighty God, I was made by BF (Benjamin Finderling) in the year 1699. On the middle part there are heraldic symbols. Downs on the waist there is another inscription, which reported on whose money the bell was cast: «Zinoviy Yanush Deshpat of Blagoshiny, podkomory Polotsk built». Zinovichi and Deshpat-Zinovichi have been known since the XIV century. Ancestor of the genus believe Z. Bratosha, and from Serbia or Moldova. Curiously, his name is mentioned in the documents, together with the Prince of Polotsk Andrew Algerdovich. Among Zinovichi family there were many outstanding people who have held a variety of governmental posts. Some of them tied their fate with our city. For example, Yuri Zinovich from 1566 to 1570 was the first of Polotsk kashtelyans, the second person in the city after magistrates. Yanush Zinovich - Polotsk podkomoryi, a man who was involved in the trial court disputes over land.
