Stone axe

During the archaeological excavations of D.V. Duk on the Settlement in 2007 was found a stone axe made over a thousand years before the foundation on this place of the city. Similar findings were previously made by archaeologist G.V. Shtyshov while exploring the Upper Castle. The discovered stone tools are typical for the late Neolithic and Bronze Age. All specimens are polished most have a wedge-shaped and drilled holes. According to G.V. Shtyhov stone axes in the 11-13th centuries served for residents of the city amulets and were associated with the cult of Perun, which is reflected in the numerous superstitions of our ancestors. Thus according to ethnographic data, the finds of ancient stone axes were considered a great success and brought happiness. These items ere associated with the cult of yield and used in the management of the economy, as well as in traditional medicine.

The stone wedge-shaped axe presented in the exposition of the Museum of Local Lore has an oval shape in a vertical section, with a point at one end and a pickaxe at the other. The find dates back to the V. BC. - V c. AD and refers to the Dnieper-Dvinskaya archaeological culture.
