Ivan Mikhaylovich CHISTYAKOV (1900-1979)
Born in Kalinin Oblast. In 1918, he voluntarily joined the Red Army. Participant of the Civil War. During the Great Patriotic War he went from being a rifle division commander to an army commander. He took part in the liberation of Polotsk in 1944, in the defeat of Japan in 1945. In 1944, he was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. By 1968, he had held command positions in the Soviet troops, the Ministry of Defense of the USSR. Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR at the 2nd and the 4th convocations.
He was awarded two Orders of Lenin, five Orders of the Red Banner, two Orders of Suvorov, 1st degree, two Orders of Kutuzov, 2nd degree, Order of Suvorov, 2nd degree, and medals.
The title of Honorary Citizen of Polotsk was conferred in 1967.
