Spinning wheel (kolovorot, kolovrot)

Spinning wheel - a device for mechanical spinning (making yarns from flax or wool). In the peasant way of life the spinning wheels have been used since the middle of the 19th century, especially in areas of intensive flax-growing (in the north and east of modern Belarus). Spinning with a spindle prevailed in the southern regions. The cost of spinning was expensive, but the yarn turned out better and smoother and it was faster and more convenient to work on them. With the help of a mechanical spinning wheel three actions were simultaneously performed: pulling the thread out of the tow, twisting and winding it onto a bobbin. The vertical spinning wheel, presented in the museum exposition was made in the late 19th - early 20th centuries. It consists of a spinning machine and a wheel placed under it fixed between two racks. The spinning wheel accompanied the girl from birth to marriage. This device, which was necessary in the house, was placed under the cradle of the girl for the treatment of night crying and for fear. Perhaps the best gift of the groom to his bride was a new spinning wheel, made and decorated with his hands.
