Flaxmill

In peasant farms flax was an indispensable culture. Fabrics and canvases were harvested from it. People sewed casual and festive clothing, made nets, ropes, strings. Flax processing technology was a time consuming process, but it was mostly women who did it.

After harvesting and threshing the stalks of this plant had to be soaked and dried. Then flax crumpled and tattered to soften the stems and separate the fibers. In each peasant house there was a whole set of devices for such processing. One of them is represented in the museum exposition - horizontal flaxmill. Myalitsa consists of a wooden case fixed on the legs with a longitudinal groove and a bilom entering it. When working on the grinder the handle was pulled up, a bunch of flax stalks were put on the slot and the beat was lowered, moving the bunch and breaking the stalks. As a result the fibers were cracked. Then it was possible to start scutching and combing flax.
